Coastcare nominated for Regional Community Group award

coastcare 1Cooloola Coastcare has received a nomination for Community Group Award for Gympie Chamber of Commerce Awards in October. Here’s an update on some of their valuable projects and partnerships:

Water Quality Monitoring

Project on track with monitoring completed for 2014 after Training in April: May-June, July-Aug, Sept-Oct. Nov-Dec due next. All proposed calibrations have been completed. The Project Plan including all 21 GPS sites, maps and WHS assessments has been completed.

Coastcare will now purchase single parameter meters for students so please support waterwatch at school or in your community network. Together we can promote our great water quality and attention to improved stormwater management.

Weed Management BMRG

Weed management has been in liaison with GRC Weeds and Pests committee funded by BMRG. It has included community engagement activities at 3 CC creek Trial Sites, plus contractor paragrass control at Billabong Park; slash pine removal on Marian Ck and other GRC reserves and Trevally Caravan Park Singapore Daisy control. Good feedback from GRC Weeds & Pests Dept promoting community partnerships.

We have made contact with Hanne Larson from Boonooroo who has been involved since 1999. Also a big thankyou to Brian Sweeney and QPWS Marine Parks and QPWS Rainbow Beach who have helped promote and in-kind support. Thanks to everyone involved. Summer monitoring will commence in December. Hope to see you all again.

Tin Can Bay Recreational Fishing Club has also offered support by way of dinghy transport to some sites- thanks guys!

Environment Levy 14-15- Revive Our Creeks!

Support for continued maintenance of Cooloola Cove Creeks and Tin Can Bay drainage reserves has been received. Council partnerships and financial assistance are always welcome. Planning for future projects with State and Federal Govt funds underway as Cooloola Cove Trials have proved successful. Big thanks to Helene, Jess, Peter, Pam, Ros, Pete, Renae and all the Cooloola Cove residents and friends and UQ / USC uni students who have contributed to our sites.

Our AGM will be December 13, 3pm aboard a vessel in the Tin Can Inlet. Please mark in your diaries! All members, waterwatchers, sustainability teachers welcome! Please contribute your ideas at this social gathering to help us prepare for 2015.
