Juncas usitatus, known as ‘Common Rush’ is one of 24 of the Juncaceae family found in Australia, 8 of which are endemic.
This tall rhizomatous, perennial rush grows to 1.2m with slender rush-type leaves with reddish brown sheaths.
Juncas usitatus is an Australian native found along the waterways of the Murray-Darling Basin and occurs in freshwater drainage channels.
An ideal grass for revegetation and for stabilisation of banks of waterways and ponds. It also provides a natural habitat for native birds and frogs.
Plant in a full sun to partly shaded position where it will tolerate drought, frost and saline soils. They are easily propagated by division and require little care once established.
