Fishing report Tin Can Bay March 2015

Our first weekend last month was a cracker, however it didn’t last too long with the weather turning sour all too quickly!

It’s been a slow month on the fishing front with strong winds, rain and rough seas putting a lot of people’s fishing plans on hold, especially when tropical cyclone Marcia beared down on the Queensland coast.

With forecasted heavy rain we are expecting to see some minor flooding, and the distinct possibility of being cut off if Coondoo Creek rises.

These poor conditions have resulted in few reports coming through. However there have been reports of mangrove jack, along with a few barra, coming from the creeks.

Crab activity has been increasing, with several reports of good sand crabs coming from around Carlo and Teebar creeks and a few muddies being caught further south around Poverty Point.

With small tides at present, if you can find a break in the weather or are prepared to brave some average conditions, areas like Teebar and Seary’s ledges or Bluff Reef will be worth a look for cod, sweetlip and squire.

There has also been a report of a large school of trevally cruising around Snapper Creek, although they weren’t looking at lures or baits.

Early in the month we had reports of mangrove jack to 53cm being caught in the creeks along with a few flathead and grunter.

One local angler wasted no time at all with the start of the 2015 barra season by landing a 101cm barra from one of the creeks.

If you’re still keen to wet a line in the poor weather, your best chance will be to seek cover in creeks such as Kauri, Poona or Tuan or try around Bullock Point near Inskip Point. (But be safe and do check conditions reports before you head out).

Our best advice for the next few days will be to stay indoors and avoid the water until everything settles down. Poor weather is an ideal time to reorganise your tackle box and maintain your gear.

The tackle shop will be open normal hours unless there is an extreme weather event. Did you know we also do rod repairs in store? With a huge 16ft bed on our rod lathe we can tackle even the largest of surf rods.

Don’t forget we are open from 6am every day for all your boat hire, bait and tackle needs.
